The following are general construction and performance guidelines.; I2 A7 B; M8 y0 j: P
Construction: The following considerations should be given to battery chargers (and packs)
5 y* j1 ?9 z& Y2 |0 M0 K$ yduring the construction evaluation.
2 C, O# r2 }; \. r' O# b% m1 ka. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model& y% B/ E( q: d2 V' C* r
of ITE for which the battery charger is to be used;
& [: Y, k1 {# f* D, Ib. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for

c. The battery charger and battery pack constructions should be controlled in the UL

Performance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program

a. For external stand-alone battery chargers that have the capability of supplying ITE
" W0 e) Z9 \5 M: g3 zwith power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery' P* {/ y1 A! t; W
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully
% c) W1 |9 L5 R1 T2 ^& Ccharged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;0 t( o" A8 R& T6 a
b. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be6 {. H1 F' M1 b
conducted with the battery charger charging battery packs that have been fully

c. If the battery charging circuit is supplied by a transformer, a Transformer Overload

- R7 c: W) E `- v, ld. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be

the battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the2 t* a: w3 a' w1 x. W: s
charger input (if the battery charger input connector is not polarized).

- [% M1 ^) y+ Q9 aBattery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into/ C& O$ v |7 O
equipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery
6 i4 B3 D" z0 o9 V! V6 a3 vpacks and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a0 _" v' X) r* H, h) B% u
hazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery
v J ]6 J/ d2 C4 \: v8 j( _pack.
; v. ^ C, ~7 Q0 E( m) uBattery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,5 U4 W9 u1 b$ Q; H6 R: `
the transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced
. e: V" E# v& N" {; Cduring other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger
2 p9 V7 e: Y# J# v1 kcircuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload
