For example, in case an air circuit-breaker (ACB) has a rating of 6300 A with an! Y0 a. ]: X: v9 k1 k
instantaneous trip release up to 16 In, do we have to apply 80640 A (16 In x 80 %)
/ O0 |3 g. M2 o$ ^% cand 120960 A (16 In x 120 %) to the main circuit of ACB by use of a high power
4 u, ^7 u: M, Y, J4 dtesting facility when performing the trip test of SEQ. I?) k" V* |  n' ]# I) F. Y3 I
Rationale:
! [6 ~2 m7 j- Z5 PIt is not so easy to conduct the instantaneous trip test using the high currents% Y9 Y; _. w. M" P6 e) m* ]- {9 g! I
mentioned above, because to do so a high power testing facility is required. In
+ o5 U$ N0 w6 Gaddition ACBs often have several ratings, which are determined by the specification" X# k8 O3 @* g8 L
of the CT in combination with the trip unit, and the trip unit is usually the same for all  r, q6 B( O' }
models.
( f8 d/ R  y5 a5 Y7 z: t# fSo some accredited testing laboratories have performed this test by applying the
' N4 F  n- B$ I. vsecondary current of CT (normally 5 A) to the input of an overcurrent release. This; k; s9 {* d  {7 G$ e; H
release is connected to operating mechanism of contacts to check the mechanical
. l. m$ e$ I+ f; M* s3 [2 Vopening of an ACB. But by use of this method, we bypass possible problems such. y2 L3 v! @9 ]! V( X" A5 a
as CT saturation, thermal and EMC influence on ACB, especially on single-pole
/ j# F% b6 ~2 Y! h$ B# _3 u) vconnection.
, Z+ K# y( F, N, ]Decision:& G  \6 N( V+ b" V1 Q- }& ~$ y
The secondary current of the CT (reduced current, 5 A, for example) may be used
% o  a4 D' ?9 M8 p' ^" g' tfor trip tests of ACBs integrated with electronic OCR for all ratings of In, but only for; d2 t( n! F0 |4 c4 w; B& \
sub-clause 8.3.3.1.2 of SEQ I.
. Y4 `' i* e# K8 H& iBut in addition, followings items shall be verified to fully cover the safety aspects of/ R/ o6 n/ C$ E4 Z( ?. h& c
the standard:
. G8 }7 Y6 c; w  N/ [1 @- y1. The conformity of the performance (at least turn ratio and composite error)
7 F8 ?) x1 \& L9 hof the CT or Rogowski coil, if any, shall be verified by specifications, test- L2 r# @  I4 K! K
reports or certificates. All CTs of the circuit-breakers of the given frame
7 \8 a; K; [; A2 bsize have to show the same performance characteristic.: e% s& D9 x: C1 n. T
2. The single pole short-circuit test with a current equal to 80 % of the
$ E3 T5 i% M- q# b8 B" U1 Mmaximum current setting of the instantaneous release and equal to 120 %, W% t. l: L; e3 O+ o6 M5 {) o$ ~: n, P
of the maximum current setting of the instantaneous release shall be7 X8 H( Y: n4 n
performed at any convenient voltage with the current in the main poles of
1 O  j; j3 z+ S5 r, n' P1 fthe circuit-breaker. The other tests required by the standard may be# K- `; V6 e3 z! `; w, p
conducted by use of a simulated input signal to the tripping unit.
