Question: Due to possible harmful radiation, what requirements are to be applied to LEDs?6 l8 C* m5 L, o# b( B" S! P
Decision: In principle, apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#). However9 q2 S2 J9 K% q3 U& t) G
in order to avoid expensive measurements, luminaires provided with LEDs0 w+ V! u- b6 _8 q# w
should be treated as follows:: N _ [7 m* u+ g
- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling! \1 F; }" y& C$ o% B% I* Z) t/ U
purposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to IEC/EN
! e9 @) i9 M2 v& x9 S7 ?60825-1 (*)-(#) and consequently there is no need for measurements. During the$ f0 ], T2 w9 m6 a' f* n4 ]
judgement, the covers, optics and similar parts that can be removed by hand, shall be7 U! q9 F3 z" z! A# q2 r/ G0 T$ `
removed. In the TRF, it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply
* Q' T9 G/ Z6 B vwith the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and that no
& s- Y/ h* c( X$ Y7 Z) f' z$ cmeasurement is made.1 B' H! }6 ^" F8 [: c5 M" k
- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration based% k, }0 i/ }# v% m: m0 o% u( _6 p k
on relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation from the* I" L/ k! l& D
LED module does not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) for Class 1
2 _$ J: h6 {+ x* ~# |2 Gor1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF, it is indicated that judgement is based on7 \0 Y+ a' [$ w! S: u2 Z
manufacturer’s declaration.
9 [7 Z) [5 V3 k) Z- If such a declaration is not provided or if judgement not possible, the measurements+ Y/ q2 w: q- U8 h# S! F5 A
given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) shall be performed. In the TRF, it is indicated that
$ o; L$ @* X& q; w: y- y8 Z9 Bmeasurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources providing& a; d% {# `3 v+ a& o
radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser source
& Q* ?/ }# f4 o0 ~4 \0 {. E- Oaccording to IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and comply with the requirements given in that
, q$ P, {4 y: d' estandard.
