Question: How to handle LEDs used in luminaires due to possible harmful radiation.$ ?6 i2 c9 J1 O, |- @4 }
Decision: In principle apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1. However in order% ^) T) `5 \$ P7 t3 Y( d$ m
to avoid expensive measurements, the luminaires provided with LEDs should be
$ X$ @7 u4 D+ o3 I6 ntreated in the following:
- b* ^' S5 F7 Q; N- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling. w+ i( X$ p( A4 b
purposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to
, A& o. R/ D$ {9 S4 zIEC/EN 60825-1 and consequently there is no need measurements. During the: y" S! j" [" d ]
judgement the covers, optics and similar, which can be removed by hand, shall be

; v# Y2 T* j6 p d4 Uwith the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 and no measurements are

: Z9 f- P( W% h8 h: v, e- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration/ ^& ~( Y S! a7 y2 T ^
based on relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation* x. C# T2 G( e9 Y v1 D
from the LED module will not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 for Class 1' u' E4 C- P5 ~2 T* h' P F
or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF it is noted that judgements have been$ n6 f3 ?; ?0 d+ D4 l M
based on a manufacturer declaration.5 t9 ~# d1 T, U$ a
- If such a declaration cannot be provided or if we are insecure on how to judge, the
0 ~6 q, j. i, ^9 Q6 c5 Zmeasurements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 shall be performed. In the TRF it is indicated6 a3 m8 ]# x u
that measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources
3 v! R5 Q8 R4 h$ D' J: oproviding radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser
$ C0 w/ v# V7 h, m' ^$ ssource according to IEC/EN 60825-1 and comply with the requirements given in that
