APPLICATION GUIDELINE:

; W. M4 E* z5 nConstruction: The following considerations should be given to battery chargers (and packs)# t3 K4 e$ Z/ g2 d" T
during the construction evaluation., l5 o: e) L; |; d7 [- D
a. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model9 N5 S4 x0 A4 o- J6 u
of ITE for which the battery charger is to be used;
/ i- u( w- V P& c0 nb. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for* K5 [0 q, j; L1 r6 u" |% p8 e |0 h9 q9 j
which the battery charger is to be used;. m6 _3 i4 [! U, w% h$ z( l( H5 K
c. The battery charger and battery pack constructions should be controlled in the UL

Performance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program$ ]2 w8 H+ K" W( s x% @

1 {0 i* D) b/ wa. For external stand-alone battery chargers that have the capability of supplying ITE; L5 ^- r, C. F; q' L! k8 {7 P3 E
with power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery; L2 ^$ t, K, I8 H( j
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully' W2 b. |" T4 L
charged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;! H8 \9 R& U. r2 B3 p) u7 i$ L1 B
b. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be3 l! H. F+ s. }: ?0 Y6 s
conducted with the battery charger charging battery packs that have been fully

d. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be

Battery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into$ m! o4 s6 b9 d* ]
equipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery
% r5 p8 h' ^4 P" s I, N4 Lpacks and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a
2 z! W8 A0 l( k9 b' i R# mhazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery5 C; V" F% z* X4 i8 U
pack.
7 H ~5 {2 p7 S+ ?6 y# e) _Battery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,- d2 q; K7 E: g/ s
the transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced
. v+ ?" B- r4 f4 y# ]8 n* Tduring other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger! t }9 ~1 k o7 c& z/ P! }
circuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload4 ?1 w0 a1 A/ F- X8 l, z
