The following are general construction and performance guidelines.& y: m, P( X# M7 }! x8 g
Construction: The following considerations should be given to battery chargers (and packs)) h$ f0 f w( r3 _7 n8 A8 }
during the construction evaluation.; m# ?3 a* h5 [; N
a. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model+ C2 x P' t" H2 E- x; j% }! v0 U
of ITE for which the battery charger is to be used;% U, p9 V" H9 D
b. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for, g! n$ Q! m" Z& a% n3 J
which the battery charger is to be used;
$ N" Z! Q' Y U9 Tc. The battery charger and battery pack constructions should be controlled in the UL
: ` W2 W( q# C( }; IFollow-up Procedure.
! L. T) G, r, S( sPerformance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program3 k$ A# _3 x0 T; P% Z- g9 _
established for battery chargers:) Q$ ?6 R z( I

! j) h( d2 r; h2 ra. For external stand-alone battery chargers that have the capability of supplying ITE( x. m% o) s" u; C3 B, g& T
with power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery N+ M- y' H1 v# J- _2 l
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully$ T6 a3 H$ g# X8 j( K; q8 K; Y# N* Z
charged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;5 `7 f0 |; b" y
b. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be

, z* K' g; \% |6 R5 ldischarged;
& M" K. n* `/ b3 J2 Oc. If the battery charging circuit is supplied by a transformer, a Transformer Overload" g, i! }5 S9 k0 a
(C1) Test should be conducted on the transformer that supplies the charging circuit.* q/ E9 ~8 g4 L, y4 }
d. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be
: q6 Y8 u. s" Kdesigned anticipating possible foreseeable fault conditions, including a short circuit of
1 X3 N$ H, Q$ F& x9 rthe battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the$ E' Y0 q- v; t" E
charger input (if the battery charger input connector is not polarized).

Battery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into
/ L6 d0 h0 V, j& @8 U+ s( @equipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery. i: g2 I" ?- D& M: M8 s7 ^
packs and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a2 n5 Y! ?* r7 c
hazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery. }. ?& L: b$ r% {; e! R8 M
pack." R2 a; j1 h& G) A* @' o/ B
Battery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,/ j# l) v* Q) k5 s& ?
the transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced
& i4 N# U& v5 G0 w8 h) N- r% Aduring other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger
+ t0 }5 e l8 [circuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload! i- s/ g+ \, W% T' u1 x/ M
