20 Output Circuit Grounding+ ^+ y: J0 N* g5 Y' X+ p/ e# o
20.1 The requirements for circuit grounding specified in 20.2 – 20.12 apply to the output circuit of fixed+ ~( P/ Z0 d: Z7 J
units and of units having standard configuration grounding type receptacles for the output ac power

% l' V' n! C: r Z" I20.2 An output ac power circuit shall be grounded when:, C! D2 w& e0 V& ?5 x
a) The circuit has no electrical connection, including a solidly connected grounded circuit; ?7 @2 a- m5 H
conductor, to supply conductors originating in another wiring system;
x# a3 U, V$ H' {b) The circuit is rated 50 – 600 volts; and
$ W8 }3 I/ G! z. ]c) The circuit is as described in (1) – (3). See requirements for Alternating-Current Circuits and9 }$ d' V6 d' ^$ I9 i
Systems to Be Grounded in the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, for other circuits:* j6 H) x2 M8 a* Y: f) P: | x' {
1) A circuit that is grounded so that the maximum voltage to ground on the) P! G+ \& f3 K/ o; i5 \
ungrounded conductors does not exceed 150 volts. This requires that one conductor of
) h+ }$ H# ?# B' Z5 Ceach of the following circuits be grounded:
6 g& r; X7 K* K" N9 |i) 120 volts, 2-wire;
7 c$ x3 P5 F" k" J) Dii) 240/120 volts, single-phase, 3-wire;9 D+ a+ m; `. X- Q) r+ L4 D
iii) 208/120 volts, two-phase, 3-wire;
/ t+ A) ~% k4 Niv) 208/120 volts, three-phase, 4-wire.5 ^0 ]0 b/ V2 l; f
2) A circuit nominally rated 480 wye/277 volts, 3-phase, 4-wire in which the neutral is' c( U; U T' S) _' B
used as a circuit conductor.
* Y2 T1 [4 ^8 j# x0 n3) A circuit-nominally rated 240/120 volts, 3-phase, 4-wire in which the midpoint of one( K0 w% E& p! _7 z

For other units, an output ac power circuit complying with (a) is able to be grounded when the construction7 V" S& S/ X- a" y x
complies with the requirements described in 20.3 and 20.11.2 `4 r. r, q/ W9 a1 }
20.3 With reference to 20.2, the conductor to be grounded shall be as follows:8 H* r: K( V4 d7 v( x5 W
a) Single-phase ac system, 2-wire – one conductor.
