Question: Due to possible harmful radiation, what requirements are to be applied to LEDs?
: K. k/ a8 R1 z4 f- e7 ODecision: In principle, apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#). However
7 \1 H- s, H6 U. }in order to avoid expensive measurements, luminaires provided with LEDs4 ~2 z/ C8 Q; M; a: C! p) Y# f
should be treated as follows:' ~& Y7 t, j8 w! U, H/ D# }0 g
- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling& y5 w' V5 H6 ]( n7 L. ]2 S
purposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to IEC/EN
) P/ D: N$ i9 R4 h60825-1 (*)-(#) and consequently there is no need for measurements. During the$ A- `: P4 t' X7 f8 {; W K
judgement, the covers, optics and similar parts that can be removed by hand, shall be
: E2 M1 k8 q4 b+ l$ t7 j3 c, b7 X3 G, Vremoved. In the TRF, it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply
# v: i- z( c% u. t' _. Mwith the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and that no
2 s3 T5 N+ H/ nmeasurement is made.9 _2 }2 E; A# g0 D/ R
- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration based
3 d1 L+ @2 o6 J6 kon relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation from the
* a2 ^7 y+ O8 Y5 Y) wLED module does not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) for Class 1
7 @) B/ C: |; f* }or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF, it is indicated that judgement is based on
) Q5 Q# x8 d8 `# z% jmanufacturer’s declaration.& R; G8 J9 o. t! I; y1 u ]" Y$ u
- If such a declaration is not provided or if judgement not possible, the measurements- f& S ]9 _9 ?5 B; D
given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) shall be performed. In the TRF, it is indicated that' S7 w8 \. u8 O' R q( P: x
measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources providing
, `1 W. R* w" P$ C nradiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser source9 U0 j5 C L, I7 n
according to IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and comply with the requirements given in that
