Question: Is it possible to issue approvals on luminaires provided with LEDs light source?
" P" P* |5 j$ z" k3 S' H5 PDecision: Yes, provided that:$ U. u) i; U. P2 \- n! v4 _
(1) The LED circuit is verified according to IEC/EN 61347-2-2 (*) or IEC/EN
& D' a, O2 a7 G$ N/ ~, d* a9 ]61347-2-11. If the laser emits radiation in the wavelength range from 180 nm to 1: F8 H* }- K/ t# x5 M- G
mm, the LED shall also be tested according to IEC/EN 60825 –1 (Safety of laser
$ y9 E3 K R1 u, G# [9 }products). Only LEDs classified as Class 1 lasers can be used without problems- ^. D& T+ \, ^4 T. U9 n/ d$ ]# X
for lighting purposes without protection./ n+ @$ h; K+ S% g2 m
(2) The thermal tests required in Section 12 of IEC/EN 60598-1 are carried out as/ J& f5 C8 i& _9 b/ O# Z) g% N. e
follows: J! ^0 N$ G, ?3 ^) a# g
(a) Luminaires (Class I or II) with built-in control gear can be tested
0 I; R0 V' o; `! H, n( u! }' saccording to the requirements of IEC/EN 60598-2-6.3 M- {# X5 D2 ^! h" E! X3 O# [
(b) For Class III luminaires, the luminaires manufacturer shall provide on7 u' v' B5 J8 }8 ~+ P) w" y6 J' D
the instructions all the necessary information to supply the LED circuit ]3 S% B+ e1 [2 g8 D
correctly or shall inform the Testing Station about the trade mark, the type% U. X0 }% x0 q2 k; e
and the technical characteristics of the appropriate control gear. There can- d! |* u4 x% O! s* S u4 Q
be three different control gears: the type and the trade mark indicated by the
; q6 T* C) u2 Q4 L; J# u( B6 _luminaire manufacturer; an electronic control gear clearly specified on the
7 \" l+ }, t m) aluminaire instructions; a ferromagnetic control gear. The tests shall be
- w, B# k. Z. H7 F- @carried out as required in Section 12 according to IEC/EN 60598-2-6 with

(*) When IEC/EN 61347-2-13 will be published, it will takes over IEC/EN
