Question: Due to possible harmful radiation, what requirements are to be applied to LEDs?8 u9 N! m) W3 C' o+ F ~2 h+ A
Decision: In principle, apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#). However& w x; l0 i) o) h' [; R: d
in order to avoid expensive measurements, luminaires provided with LEDs
! Q7 S# \6 e) X2 A. B* B" jshould be treated as follows:) D2 U3 }- V6 J- s! G
- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling$ x0 g$ a6 B8 q# \
purposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to IEC/EN
1 {, ]! c$ B f( K0 w; ]60825-1 (*)-(#) and consequently there is no need for measurements. During the( {+ Q; @ X" P2 h3 M! e
judgement, the covers, optics and similar parts that can be removed by hand, shall be
8 H2 r. o0 T! ?. d, {+ o$ j- j1 \removed. In the TRF, it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply4 n( ?8 z* d1 z: `& ?6 B6 |% K
with the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and that no$ X, N6 X+ `2 U5 c- n
measurement is made.
0 w) B( G/ L( z7 B0 z) Y4 u- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration based& M& u' E0 @. |1 B; y# ^. d1 y: v+ k
on relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation from the
9 B( w. \# v2 p7 \+ j+ n4 `LED module does not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) for Class 1
- A0 v$ `8 F7 kor1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF, it is indicated that judgement is based on
5 Y* ~/ b- J! j0 amanufacturer’s declaration.
1 U% [) J+ d7 _- If such a declaration is not provided or if judgement not possible, the measurements
_. c' r/ @7 Q6 Sgiven in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) shall be performed. In the TRF, it is indicated that5 t2 e& T9 H0 G! b4 ~5 R" a
measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources providing q& t! i" c) y5 h
radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser source
, l* d& A+ y; ^( l, p/ @according to IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and comply with the requirements given in that
