Subject:
Protection against mechanical
hazards
Key words:
- Guards
- Access
Decision taken by
ETF3 and confirmed
by CTL at its 38th
meeting, in Toronto
Question:
The requirement states that there must be no access to hazardous moving parts in Normal
Condition and no parts must be expelled in Single Fault Condition. Does this mean it is
acceptable to have access to hazardous parts in Single Fault Condition?
Decision:
Mechanical parts are not subject to Single Fault Condition examination.
Explanation:
Specific tests are included in the standard for strength, e.g. impact hammer test, which
determine the acceptable strength of parts. It is not permissible to remove or presume
destruction of mechanical components in simulated Single Fault Conditions in addition to
these pre-determined requirements.
Where safety of a moving part is determined by an electronic control, for example a speed
control circuit, then single fault analysis of this circuit must be performed if a hazard could
arise.
