The following are general construction and performance guidelines.

during the construction evaluation.- J; h0 s$ J* C, Z% `2 U
a. A marking should be provided on the battery charger indicating the specific model
+ x/ A4 f9 y( sof ITE for which the battery charger is to be used;6 f7 G5 f/ N! s/ s* k
b. The charger should be marked to indicate the battery pack (mfg./type/rating) for2 R3 F2 @8 b% Z: V0 @
which the battery charger is to be used;

Performance: The following considerations should be given to the performance test program. ?/ `; L9 b& f5 a) Y
established for battery chargers:

a. For external stand-alone battery chargers that have the capability of supplying ITE) S0 Q& P# N b
with power, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be conducted with the battery8 `2 [5 C+ O4 B0 B! {
charger supplying the ITE load. Discharged battery packs should be replaced with fully
/ c; V8 e ]3 pcharged battery packs until thermal equilibrium is achieved;) l J# F8 l5 m" B0 F3 B; d1 P# n
b. For all battery charger circuits, a Heating Test (sub-clause 4.5) should be& u1 E; s' n$ l* c1 Z
conducted with the battery charger charging battery packs that have been fully
: W$ w+ Q+ c& V* J% L. Wdischarged;
: z, h) B$ w2 T# h- l1 L' ?$ hc. If the battery charging circuit is supplied by a transformer, a Transformer Overload
% c, D% i/ e. U& T$ [7 @(C1) Test should be conducted on the transformer that supplies the charging circuit.
) q2 X5 I E- Q+ O9 _d. An Abnormal Operation Test program (per Sub-clauses 4.3.8 and 5.3.6) should be+ a% @. C8 b9 S. I, M
designed anticipating possible foreseeable fault conditions, including a short circuit of
) T: }2 P, B& x; qthe battery charger output (if user accessible) and reverse polarity testing of the
; r) S1 R" Z5 W: `4 j( }charger input (if the battery charger input connector is not polarized). ~& a" Y. g/ @" b: K
RATIONALE:- h1 i% P% Y6 r5 ]
Battery chargers evaluated under this Standard introduce some unique considerations into
9 t( [7 K+ X4 P5 U; v0 p) hequipment evaluations. Battery chargers are typically designed for specific size (power) battery
! @1 |- E6 B ~/ d7 Z, r. dpacks and use of battery packs other than that specified by the manufacturer could create a
* o& ], U5 [2 {5 `hazard. Therefore, it is prudent to require correlation marking between charger unit and battery9 p7 Z5 |& L! o; _: ? m
pack./ d& f3 F) l. h+ k: |+ Q
Battery charger circuits typically are supplied power by a transformer. During the charging cycle,
. I$ m- C$ V8 {3 Cthe transformer may be subjected to a different set of thermal conditions than experienced: q( _& z& R8 e' m
during other normal load testing, and it is more likely that a transformer supplying the charger9 y1 p" K+ j" t
circuit will be subjected to an overload condition. Therefore, requiring a transformer overload
