Define the “best practice” test procedure for the ball pressure test based on the, ?0 j( Q) l- p: n
requirements of the standard, and for practical reasons also based on 89/1011/CD, which/ i  a/ J  ?5 J5 x. [" a* x' u
is not in all respects identical with the requirements of the standard.

$ t1 i; D3 N( w+ eIn addition to clause 4.1 of the standard and due to various qualities of steel balls for rolling
3 S7 J* |$ u4 L/ B1 r* y9 |bearings, the tolerance for the steel ball diameter shall not exceed ±1% to ensure8 B/ ^9 N2 T( ?

& R, k) A. P, z6 C/ c1 F  fIn addition to clause 4.2 of the standard, the specimen support shall be a metal block of
- M) u/ N- j" Z' Nsteel, with a diameter  50 mm and a height of  100 mm or equivalent volume and mass.1 j0 C1 S3 o$ U# d$ l1 v2 p$ z2 R
In addition to 4.3 of the standard, a forced air convection single cabinet according to IEC/ D1 m- b2 {: `6 q
60216-4-1:1990, clauses 4.1.5 and 4.1.6 shall be used.
+ `  g+ U" s: i4 x) SIn addition to 7.1 of the standard conduct the test in air, in a heating cabinet being capable to
1 [3 y- J. ~- I+ w7 ]4 Vreturn within 5 min and without any temperature overshoot exceeding +5°C to the4 o2 H3 j7 Q: X$ o& G
previously adjusted and required air temperature within a tolerance of +/- 2°C .

Before introducing the test specimen, bring the cabinet, the test apparatus and the test
, n) M2 M6 h& s( Y) Hspecimen support to the required temperature and maintain the required test temperature for+ E7 ~5 b: s3 _6 o
24 h or until equilibrium conditions are reached, whichever occurs sooner.
. O9 ~% Y9 b/ n! @, EWhen thermal equilibrium conditions are reached, place the test specimen on the approximate
0 J1 Y9 s# n! c. Vcentre of the test specimen support so that its upper surface is horizontal. Gently lower the
% c* A: b( J5 y- @- C% ^; ipressure ball on to the approximate centre of the test specimen. Ensure that no conditions exist
6 S' r1 D5 @! k; Dthat will cause the pressure ball to move other than in a downward direction during the test.1 f  P/ A# Z8 ?
After the ball pressure apparatus has been applied for 60 +2/-0 minutes, remove it and within 10/ i7 E3 j" y# v7 W
s immerse the test specimen in ambient temperature water for 6 min ±2 min.6 g+ V% l8 I. v: W
Within 3 minutes of removal from the water, measure the diameter of the indentation caused by
' I) h8 D* W" z- dthe pressure ball to one decimal place.
+ u" L3 O8 T5 d( @3 a9 d( sDeviant from 7.2 of the standard, but in accordance with 89/1011/CD, the diameter “d” of
6 ?6 u- c2 N. S  ethe indentation is to be measured as close as possible to the diameter of the “solid edge”: r! w- C: c) A0 G5 v# O  Q1 Y
of the indentation according to both a) figure 2a shown below and b) picture examples
' z* A3 I4 T/ r6 \7 Z& y6 Ugiven in Annex A. The diameter of the solid edge of the indentation (dimension d ) shall
