Question: Due to possible harmful radiation, what requirements are to be applied to LEDs?
8 v4 f* M+ M! L& i) s) e; pDecision: In principle, apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#). However
) z6 S" z; S0 u' h; m6 Q+ Hin order to avoid expensive measurements, luminaires provided with LEDs
  `" B3 N6 o- Z; D1 a% d9 ushould be treated as follows:4 y1 P9 w( ]6 b' Q8 X' v% {% n. i! W
- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling
. b: I- i, h6 npurposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to IEC/EN/ W; }! f' v% `! G& v( _; z/ s
60825-1 (*)-(#) and consequently there is no need for measurements. During the' }7 _+ c9 j) J$ K' E3 M
judgement, the covers, optics and similar parts that can be removed by hand, shall be
: b4 }$ f* S7 C+ Bremoved. In the TRF, it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply1 _% `1 f- \- r4 O( j5 m% p
with the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and that no
" C6 T# `, Q0 l$ Lmeasurement is made.$ }0 }4 {! i. p$ L. Y
- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration based
" T# M3 ^% M' f0 T8 Ron relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation from the
' }* S  x/ b5 pLED module does not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) for Class 1' U# z8 F, w1 o
or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF, it is indicated that judgement is based on# m% x' H3 H) F- ?  H
manufacturer’s declaration.1 e; v; y. V/ I' K
- If such a declaration is not provided or if judgement not possible, the measurements
, X0 Z8 b9 N) E) a/ P' K; ?0 Ygiven in IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) shall be performed. In the TRF, it is indicated that0 f4 U% g# v2 u5 H% i( k# d, z0 H
measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources providing$ ]' ~+ ~0 I* C) H
radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser source% F. Y% C8 m* c  m% w
according to IEC/EN 60825-1 (*)-(#) and comply with the requirements given in that) V  q4 g+ I- L5 E
standard.
! l7 [+ s/ N# bInformation about the action taken in relation to the LED radiation should be provided in the2 h7 l& }: w4 y: L4 A% m, Y& c( z
