2.10.5.1 General
/ o# |) U7 i4 n G# [2 z+ jIn 2.10.5, the requirements for SOLID INSULATION (except those for thin sheet material) and for
, q# M/ Z+ p# P8 U; K2 k2 J- n7 z6 Yinsulating compound also apply to gel materials, used for this purpose.
: A) {; I1 _5 m6 i9 n7 b$ nSOLID INSULATION shall be:1 N' `6 i4 h, v. R" e: H
− so dimensioned that overvoltages, including transients, that enter the equipment, and
1 Z n, ?& Y6 c9 e4 \4 n1 Ypeak voltages that may be generated within the equipment, do not break down the SOLID; k" s- _! T$ T+ v* ?9 q
INSULATION; and( d. L! f B" m9 c, M$ r
− so arranged that the likelihood of breakdown occurring due to the presence of pinholes in
% J; y0 Z" s* v$ zthin layers of insulation is limited.+ q3 p/ N" f/ l( E' ]
Solvent-based enamel is accepted only on winding wire as described in 2.10.5.13.( E3 h5 z, C9 E" w3 D. ~
Except for printed boards, SOLID INSULATION shall either) R/ F; a/ h* N( |) i T0 Z
− comply with minimum distances through insulation in accordance with 2.10.5.2; or6 f9 h) T4 \. Z) t# A% s# W- I
− meet the requirements and pass the tests in 2.10.5.3 to 2.10.5.13, as applicable.& i5 k6 \6 H/ z8 v; T* ?

Compliance with the requirements of 2.10.5.2 to 2.10.5.14 for the adequacy of SOLID) _2 [! U) I3 `9 Z+ n
INSULATION is verified by inspection and measurement, taking into account Annex F, by the8 K/ M0 y% o8 O
electric strength tests of 5.2 and by any additional tests required in 2.10.5.4 to 2.10.5.14.
3 j* k6 R, `3 m7 w1 k* N6 e5 U2.10.5.2 Distances through insulation
* b7 m5 i/ g* c4 ~+ ]+ CIf a design is based on distances through insulation, these distances shall be dimensioned2 {5 t# q" B* }$ T
according to the application of the insulation (see 2.9) and as follows (see Figure F.14):
1 N5 K( A& \/ T9 G: R$ F5 W3 y0 g− if the PEAK WORKING VOLTAGE does not exceed 71 V, there is no requirement for distance
2 g4 }6 z+ a$ A% ithrough insulation;8 q8 B4 z& Q6 v7 I1 b( K5 |
− if the PEAK WORKING VOLTAGE exceeds 71 V, the f ollowing rules apply:; f( m! `3 c$ d6 N* X0 ^
• for FUNCTIONAL INSULATION and BASIC INSULATION there is no minimum distance through
4 x; L3 r* v# z+ Pinsulation;' P* K3 Z5 A& P( \
• SUPPLEMENTARY INSULATION or REINFORCED INSULATION shall have a distance through
