Define the “best practice” test procedure for the ball pressure test based on the

7 Y7 H) H6 X3 c' N4 h; r7 Z6 vIn addition to clause 4.1 of the standard and due to various qualities of steel balls for rolling; `; [, f8 ]7 _/ g
bearings, the tolerance for the steel ball diameter shall not exceed ±1% to ensure

% U' F, v* P5 ]1 t0 m# ~! A+ HIn addition to clause 4.2 of the standard, the specimen support shall be a metal block of8 o& v; E9 n/ d( f8 N6 p

centre of the test specimen support so that its upper surface is horizontal. Gently lower the  n3 {/ e. r, A! d
pressure ball on to the approximate centre of the test specimen. Ensure that no conditions exist3 Z$ |. M2 Y9 d4 S% V
that will cause the pressure ball to move other than in a downward direction during the test.. g  X- V) N! E! w, k; W( U
After the ball pressure apparatus has been applied for 60 +2/-0 minutes, remove it and within 10- a9 Q# w3 }, B" M9 C8 T& i
s immerse the test specimen in ambient temperature water for 6 min ±2 min., C4 [) s4 |, n; H9 ]: t6 G
Within 3 minutes of removal from the water, measure the diameter of the indentation caused by
) M  [& |) F% x9 e2 h7 Sthe pressure ball to one decimal place.
! Z' z3 r3 Q: L- d* Y" SDeviant from 7.2 of the standard, but in accordance with 89/1011/CD, the diameter “d” of
  a# P1 J3 r; qthe indentation is to be measured as close as possible to the diameter of the “solid edge”
0 C! Q$ G& N# Iof the indentation according to both a) figure 2a shown below and b) picture examples
3 x, o. a+ A& z( H/ Pgiven in Annex A. The diameter of the solid edge of the indentation (dimension d ) shall) K; ~5 z' x* B% s# l
exclude any material deformation as shown in figure 2c below.
