29.3 Except as noted in 29.4 and 29.5, a part that is subject to air or vapor pressure (including the vapor- o+ o' c4 f. Y7 k+ z8 _

29.4 A test need not be performed to determine whether a part complies with the requirement in 29.3 if + t% {& d' p5 @9 k' Q" ^study and analysis indicate that the strength of the part is adequate for the purpose as a result of its% X* ^2 x( O- Z! [
material and dimensions – for example, copper or steel pipe of standard size and provided with standard U, {; _( }/ @( afittings might be considered to have adequate strength./ h8 N- z; W* b' ]' O- o8 `
29.5 A pressure vessel bearing the ASME code inspection symbol (²H², ²M², ²S², or ²U²) is considered9 N6 f$ A& _/ W0 [8 w+ z" Y
to comply with the requirement in 29.3 if the vessel is marked with a value of working pressure not less4 N9 @; ~4 i) t# d$ c9 C0 }* B
than that to which it is subject during normal or abnormal operation. " t" F) g0 p; q1 C4 \) F7 A29.6 If a test is necessary to determine whether a part complies with the requirement in 29.3, two samples , c/ r+ ]9 }, \" { nof the part are to be subjected to a hydrostatic-pressure test. Each sample is to be filled with water as to 5 J+ e# @& q8 }/ U9 ^: ]exclude air and is to be connected to a hydraulic pump. The pressure is to be raised gradually to the % }/ Z* h3 e- |' {; r: qspecified test value and is to be held at that value for 1 minute. The results are not acceptable if either& k" j3 D& L# M" q
sample bursts or leaks, except as indicated in 29.7. 3 `: b2 a6 P' H$ X% a29.7 Leakage at a gasket during the hydrostatic-pressure test is not unacceptable unless it occurs at a % l: p2 f1 ]8 vpressure 40 percent or less of the required test value., V; ]2 l2 }& w! b* Q" v- n( H1 S! }
29.8 A means for relieving pressure shall be provided for all parts in which pressure might be generated 2 I; J: @0 B, E$ s! ~! Fin the event of fire. ! W, |) R7 c+ k3 W$ n29.9 Pressure-relief devices (see 29.15), fusible plugs, soldered joints, nonmetallic tubing, or other & R, j$ ?" ~" m& ]$ ipressure-relief means or the equivalent may be employed to comply with the requirements in 29.8." c- x$ k! 29.10 There shall be no shut-off valve between the pressure-relief means and the parts that it is intended0 s$ o7 E! m. O6 _* Q

29.11 A vessel having an inside diameter of more than 3 inches (76.2 mm) and subject to air or steam+ D9 Y5 X2 c2 X' W8 l
pressure generated or stored within the appliance shall be protected by a pressure-relief device.8 H' _. G# h% f7 ^, }
29.12 The start-to-discharge pressure setting of the pressure-relief device shall not be higher than the $ _/ _3 Z) |0 m6 j+ Bworking pressure marked on the vessel. The discharge rate of the device shall acceptably relieve the 0 R2 o! i- b- |& o2 `pressure. 0 @' Z8 w5 O& {/ d. b/ K. x29.13 A pressure-relief device shall comply with all four of the following:6 _# G+ H( A+ N4 @
a) Shall be connected as close as possible to the pressure vessel or parts of the system that it 3 @9 [3 x. x. L) |2 z3 U9 G7 z( Qis intended to protect; ]3 [- a5 C& J8 {( Bb) Shall be installed so that it is readily accessible for inspection and repair and cannot be - B- E* i0 ^0 k6 m! n3 `readily rendered inoperative;+ Q* T, b! c) Shall have its discharge opening located and directed so that the risk of scalding is reduced + H9 j; s1 r @3 uto a minimum; and , Z* X. L; @6 ?' I( bd) Shall have its discharge opening located and directed so that operation of the device does 3 I9 M, l c+ M# Cnot deposit moisture on bare live parts or on insulation or components affected detrimentally by0 C: o7 e: b2 }2 d8 w2 Q

29.14 A pressure-relief device having an adjustable setting shall be judged on the basis of its maximum! K, m, e% J2 G7 Q: w" ~
setting unless the adjusting means is sealed at a lower setting. , F5 ^& U" Z! W* P3 ]) y& u29.15 A pressure-relief device is considered to be a pressure-actuated valve or rupture member intended - E! y5 C$ ^/ N( w$ m: `to relieve excessive pressures automatically. * e: |9 A5 U# R/ _: F29.16 Where a pressure relief device is required, the control responsible for limiting the pressure in the 3 w" w9 _6 w6 P% R!
