Vietnam grapples with bird flu

Vietnam is experiencing a burst of bird flu outbreaks in ten provinces nationwide which have resulted in two deaths since January.
Roads leading into a village were by an outbreak last week in Ha Nam province on the outskirts of the capital, Hanoi, were covered in lime powder to help control the disease’s spread. One farm in the province had 2,400 ducks infected and subsequently culled last month.

district, Ha Nam province, Vietnam.
As awareness of the outbreak spreads, many farms have worked to improve their operations including setting up systems for detecting sick ducks and chickens. Ha Nam province recently ordered 1 million doses of vaccine - hoping it may still provide a little protection, despite some fears that it may no longer be effective.
Despite all this, doctor Babatunde Olowokure, an epidemiologist with the World Health Organisation in Vietnam, ruled out an epidemic at this stage.
