Help! I can't remember your name!
We've all been in this situation. Someone introduces us to another person, and when we talk to this new person, our mind goes blank. What was the name again? How do we "cover up" for this embarrassing situation without losing face? First of all, relax. As everybody has experienced this situation at least once in business situations, no offence will be taken by the other person. If you can avoid thinking it's a problem unique to you, then you're less likely to show your embarrassment by going red, or by stumbling over your words. Secondly, look confident. Smile and look the other person in the eyes, and say something like:"Sorry, I didn't catch your name."
"Sorry, I didn't get your name."
"Sorry, what was your name again?"
Finally, repeat the person's name so you have a better chance of remembering it. This also means that if you haven't heard the name correctly, the other person will correct you. (If this happens, say something like "OK" instead of repeating their name again. Then continue with a conversation. See the post on The first conversation for more ideas.)
