Question:
We consider a class I tool employing a universal type motor. The motor shaft is
conductively coupled to the earthed enclosure through steel ball bearings.
In this case, shall the motor be of class II construction (motor shaft separated from the rotor
windings and commutator by double or reinforced insulation) ?
Decision:
Yes, the accessible motor shaft of a class I tool shall be separated from the rotor windings
and commutator by double or reinforced insulation (class II construction).
