Question:
What requirements are needed for PCB layer transformers using etched windings?
Decision:
The requirements of the IEC 60601:1988 Ed.2 should be used with regard to creepage distances and
isolation distances through thickness.
Explanatory notes:
This issue will be put forward to TC 66 and TC62 to deal with this specific problem. In the meantime a
temperature cycling test according to IEC 60950 can be used for reference. Base for this test are the
temperatures retrieved during normal condition tests calculated/adjusted to an ambient of 40 °C. It is
important that the influence of the temperature of other components shall be taken into consideration.
The minimum thickness through insulation can be taken as from IEC 60950, being 0,4 mm.
