meeting, in Toronto
Question:
What isolation and loading requirements are applied to auto transformers?
Decision
Tests for loading are applied when applicable as for isolation transformers. No isolation
requirements are applied between voltage outlets, however, care must be taken to ensure that
circuits separated by voltages are suitably isolated form one another to prevent short circuit
of the intervening winding.
Explanation
Auto transformers are subject to overheating tests in the same way as isolating transformers,
however, they are not designed to provide isolation and these requirements are, therefore, not
applicable as there is direct connection between circuits.
