Subject:
Mains supply cords
Key words:
- Mains cord
- Temperature
Decision taken by
ETF3 and confirmed
by CTL at its 38th
meeting, in Toronto
Question:
1. No requirements are specified for the suitability of mains cords when the range of
Certified temperatures (max 250°C as far as I know) are exceeded 550°C surface
temperature for example have been measured in a test.
2. The temperature rating of the appliance coupler is not based on temperature of the heating
equipment that is able to generate, it is based on temperature of the contacts. Therefore there
is no relation in the way as it is written in IEC61010-1 standard.
Decision:
1. Adequate provision must be provided in the construction of the product and in the
associated user handbook to ensure that the cord used does not exceed the maximum
temperature it is certified for under normal/sfc. For example, protection of the cord is
required in particular at the point of entry to the equipment, as well as the parts where it
is liable to be damaged in use.
2. In such extreme cases it is suggested that the equipment be fitted with a non-detachable
cable in line with the decision 1 above and not a detachable supply cord.
