Standard(s):
IEC 60598-1 All editions
Subclause(s): 8.2.1
No. Year DSH 0896 2010
Category: LITE Developed by: ETF5 OSM/LUM
Subject:
Luminaires with LEDs
Key words:
- Sub clause 8.2.1
- Lamp compartment
- Two lines of defence
Approved at the 49th CTL Plenary Meeting, in 2012
Question:
More and more luminaires with LEDs will be used for normal lighting. Not all are supplied with SELV
control gears. For the user often it cannot be seen in a case of failure (falling out of the light source) which
light source is behind the cover. Sub clause 8.2.1 requires protection against electric shock even if the
operation cannot be achieved by hand. We heard that other Test Houses allow the accessibility of live
LEDs units after opening of the lamp compartment with normal tools, as screwdrivers, coins or other
object that may be used to operate a screw or similar fixing means.
Decision:
The requirements of sub clause 8.2.1 shall be applied also for luminaires with LEDs. The LEDs unit,
independent whether connected to the internal supply with terminals or connectors, shall be seen as a
replaceable light source according to the requirements of the standard. In other cases (if not replaceable
and/or not fed by a SELV source) it shall not be possible to open the lamp compartment with normal tools
or the live parts shall be insulated by an insulation corresponding to basic insulation for 230 V (two lines
of defence).
