Question:
In clause 20.7.4 of IEC 60598-2-20, it is mentioned that only 4.11.4 and 4.11.5 of clause 4.11 apply for
electrical connections and current carrying parts. Sub-clause 4.11.1 (contact pressure through insulating
material) does not apply. In a rope light connecting system we often have connections with pins that are
stuck axially into the bare wires after cutting the lighting tube. This is contact pressure through insulating
material. With about 16 W/m and a length until 100 m we can have a current more than 6 A at the
connecting part. With those connections we have a high risk of fire. § 20.7.4 of IEC 60598-2-20 applies, in
our opinion, to the connection to the lamp only (e.g. connection to Edison lampholders with insulating
piercing terminals). Perhaps we can follow IEC 60335-1 - § 28.2 (contact pressure through insulating
material – 0,5 A limitation for the current). We have also informed our National Standard Committee about
the matter.
Decision:
The connection is not acceptable due to the requirements of Section 15 of IEC 60598-1.
