Subject:
Classification of self contained emergency luminaires according to the mode of operation
Key words:
- Maintained emergency luminaire
- Non maintained emergency luminaire
- Mode of operation
To be approved at the 49th CTL Plenary Meeting, in 2012
Question:
According to the definition 22.3.5, “Maintained emergency luminaire is a luminaire in which the
emergency lighting lamp is energized at all times when normal or emergency lighting is required”. Can
the emergency lighting lamp of a self contained emergency luminaire classified as “maintained
emergency luminaire”, be switched on and off with an external switch in the installation? The question is
asked because if the lamp is switched off when the supply is present, the luminaire can be seen as a “non
maintained emergency luminaire”.
Decision:
Yes, only during the normal lighting operation.
